Programs
Overview
The Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR) Afterschool Services Program was launched in the fall of 2005 and is administered through the Division of Family and Children Services’ (DFCS) Office of Family Independence. The program seeks to provide healthy, developmentally appropriate opportunities for youth to avoid risky behaviors.
Since its inception, DHR has funded over 230 programs in schools, faith-based and community-based organizations. These organizations have served more than 19,000 youth throughout the state of Georgia.
Why does the Department of Human Resources invest in programs? Because afterschool and summer learning programs provide the context in which youth can engage in positive behaviors – apprenticeships, teen employment, college tours, homework assistance, physical activity – and most importantly build relationships with adults. In addition, learning opportunities afforded to participants support educational attainment, a key factor in preventing future welfare dependency.
Through technical assistance activities and direct program funding, the DHR Afterschool Services program is proud to support the development of a network of quality afterschool and summer learning programs in Georgia.
